When the names Hawaii or Oahu are heard maybe nothing comes to mind more often than Waikiki. And when Waikiki comes to mind surely the first thought is its famous beach. And the beach at Waikiki is best enjoyed with the help of a Hawaiian institution, the Beach Boys of Waikiki.
Led by pioneers such as George Freeth and Duke Kahanamoku, turn-of-the-century beach boys helped revitalize an ancient surfing culture that had languished under oppressive European constraints. Surfing hadn't completely vanished, but it was frowned upon as frivolous and immoral when European civilization took root in Hawaii during the 1800s. Fortunately, a small band of watermen persevered and went on to see the ailing pastime into the 20th The beach boys of today are not very different. They love the water, the ocean more than anything and almost as much as the ocean they love to help others enjoy the ocean to its fullest. Check with the concierge or the front desk at your hotel and they will be able to introduce you to the beach boy that best knows your section of Waikiki Beach. With their help learn to surf, take a ride in an outrigger canoe or simply take time and listen to them as they “talk story” about the Waikiki of the past and present.
Dolphins

Of all the beautiful creatures that call Hawaii home maybe none is more beautiful, graceful or appealing to man than the dolphin. Hawaii is home to a wide selection of dolphins including Spinner, Spotted and Bottlenose dolphins. They can all be seen in the waters off of Oahu. You will see them if you take a whale watching cruise, you will see them if you take a ride on one of the many catamarans and you might quite possibly see them from shore as you are enjoying the simple beauty of the Pacific. But as well there are many tours operated that allow you to enjoy the dolphins from much closer and yet in non intrusive ways.
Hawaii's dolphins exude an energy and a vitality that has uplifted man since ancient times. Enjoy seeing them dancing on the waves, caressing each other with their pectoral fins, swimming belly-to-belly or joyfully burst from the water leaping, twirling and spinning in the air. These are truly incredible and unforgettable experiences you won't want to miss during your journey to the Oahu.
