US - Japan Seminar

Each year the Honolulu Festival Foundation presents a seminar with a theme that focuses on a specific cultural and historical relationship between the United States and Japan, past and present.  The guest speakers are an actual part of the theme, having lived it themselves or through their family. The 2004 Honolulu Festival celebrated the 150 years of U.S - Japan relations by inviting a sixth generation direct descendant of Commodore Matthew Perry. The 2005 Festival focused on John Manjiro, the first Japanese citizen ever to set foot on American soil.  Last year was Wally Yonamine of Hawaii, one of the first Americans to play professional baseball in Japan, and Building Friendships by Playing Hardball was the theme.
These seminars are not only educational but also give the audience an opportunity to reconnect with various aspects of culture and history and to hear stories that may have never been shared before.  Please stay tuned for our seminar in 2008.
