Come and Play at Waikiki Beach Walk
Having lived in Hawaii for many years there are times you take the beauty of Waikiki for granted and forget why the visitors love it so much. Granted the local folks find parking hard to find or say it's too touristy and so on and so on. I enjoy playing tourist on occasion. It's fun to explore Waikiki when you have a free afternoon. My husband and I decided to "play at Waikiki Beach Walk." This area is quite new and was renovated by Outrigger and reopened in March 2007. The Honolulu Festival has used this venue as one of their performance stages in Waikiki for the past two years. What was once a tired looking Lewers Street has been revitalized into the new Waikiki Beach Walk. And there's more renovation to come on Beachwalk, the road that runs parallel to Lewers Street. There's a "resort" feeling to this area. What I mean is that I felt like I was visiting a neighbor island resort like Kaanapali, Maui.

Shopping Center |
There's a lot you can do at Waikiki Beach Walk. Shopping is great here. There are unique stores as well as the familiar ones. Mana Hawaii features authentic art and crafts made in Hawaii. They include traditional musical instruments, hula implements, novels, history books,

woodwork, muu muu, ceramics, gourmet condiments and snacks. The store hosts local artists and cultural

in on-site demonstrations including ukulele classes, lomi lomi massage, and lauhala weaving. The store also offers complimentary cultural activities to the public. You can learn the language, hula, ukulele and other instruments, lauhala weaving and about Hawaiian spirituality. Banana Wind is also an interesting retail shop that resembles a "Polynesian trading post" and sells tropical home accessories. Kuloko Arts located in the Outrigger Reef sells authentic Hawaiian art.
As you walk down Waikiki Beach Walk there are many places to dine. You can stop for a snack, something sweet, coffee, other beverages or complete meals. What I thought was nice is that there are so many to choose

from and all within a short stroll. If you look at the Waikiki Beach Walk website www.waikikibeachwalk.com
there is a complete list of the restaurants. The website even introduces each restaurant's specialties including images of their beverages and food. How cool is that! Gelato, pasta, steaks, teppan yaki, ale by the yard, pastrami and pizza are just a few of the foods you can get here.
So I've talked about shopping and dining. But there's more. One of the best things about Waikiki Beach Walk is that the beach is so easy to get to. Walk down Lewers Street down to the Outrigger Reef Hotel, cut through their lobby and soon you will find yourself on Waikiki Beach. It's the perfect place to swim, gaze upon Diamond Head or watch the beautiful sunset. And it's such a fun place to be because there are so many people enjoying themselves. Actually it's a great place to people watch too.

Enjoy a leisurely walk on the beach. And to quench your thirst, stop at Shore Bird Restaurant and Beach Bar. This popular restaurant is located right on the beach in the Outrigger Reef Hotel. Visitors just can't get enough of this place. They are known for their fun bar overlooking Diamond Head and their "grill your own steaks and fish" concept.
I hope that I have been able to entice you to spend some time at Waikiki Beach Walk on your next visit to Honolulu. I have just touched the surface of things to do here. You will have to come and experience it for yourself!
