Enjoy a Concert at the Waikiki Shell
Lately I have been noticing that there are always so many things to do on the weekends here in Hawaii. The state of Hawaii has a population of about 1.2 million with over 70% of us or 896,000 people living in the county of Honolulu. There are so many cities and states that surpass our numbers. I am amazed at the number of events that are happening each weekend in Honolulu. And what is most surprising is that they are all well attended. Turnouts are great. So what does that say about the local folks? That we love to go out! That we love to party!

Just this past weekend we had the 28th Annual Greek Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Sunset on the Beach, the Artfest, two Bon Dances, concerts and so much more. So where am I leading to? What I would like to feature in this Let's Talk Story article is the Waikiki Shell. The Waikiki Shell is a wonderful outdoor concert area located right in Waikiki near the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park. Waikiki Beach is just across the street and Diamond Head serves as a backdrop for this venue. The Waikiki Shell seats 2,400 persons and the lawn area has capacity for an additional 6,000 persons. This is a perfect place for an evening concert year round because of our friendly climate.

Concerts at the Waikiki Shell are always very popular. The prices for tickets vary depending on the entertainment however the tickets for lawn seating are always affordable. Friends and families bring their goza (straw mats), blankets and backrests and enjoy concerts under the stars. Bento (box lunches) are enjoyed by all. Coolers are prohibited but there are many food and refreshment stands inside, nothing to worry about. There are soft drinks, beer, wine and even margaritas.
And for those who want to bring coolers and have an all-out potluck and just want to listen to the music, you can set up just outside of the Waikiki Shell and enjoy the concert. There is no need to purchase tickets and no hassle of the security people checking your bags.
This past weekend was the Cecilio and Kapono, "Back in the Day," 35th Anniversary Concert. So many of us grew up listening to their music. I think I knew most of their songs and lyrics, kind of like listening to the Beatles. Their voices are strong and their musical talent better than ever. It was a wonderful evening spent with friends. The Waikiki Shell was packed with a nostalgic crowd, many baby boomers. Hey, those of us in our 50's are the new 40's!
I hope that I have been able to paint a nice picture of another thing to do in Hawaii during your visit here during the Honolulu Festival. Enjoy a concert at the Waikiki Shell and experience a beautiful night under the stars in Honolulu!
