Let's talk story about Hawaii

Linda Fujikawa, a true volunteer, serving our community and the Honolulu Festival

Let's talk story about a person that I have admired since high school. Yes, since high school back in the 70's. Linda Fujikawa and I attended Nile C. Kinnick High School in Yokohama, Japan. A natural leader and honor student, Fujikawa (Enga at that time) was involved in many extracurricular activities. It was no surprise to many of us that she joined the Peace Corps after college and taught English in Korea.

Linda Enga Fujikawa is an Assistant Professor of Japanese at Kapi'olani Community College where she has dedicated over twenty years in educating students of Hawaii and all over the world. Her credits include: Recipient of University of Hawaii, Excellence in Teaching Award, 1999; Fulbright Bulgaria scholar, 2003; and Recipient of 2008 University of Hawaii, Wo Innovations in Teaching Award, for creation of 100% online Japanese Conversation for Business and Visitor Industry with students, faculty, staff, and technical team. This course is offered as a online course and parts of it aired on cable TV as free public service for the people of Hawaii.

Fujikawa was most recently honored last year with a national award by the Peace Corps. She received the Franklin H. Williams Award which is bestowed upon Peace Corps alumni of color who continue the program's mission at home through community service, promoting a better understanding of other people around the world. She was honored for starting an International Service Learning Program called International Cafe at Kapiolani Community College. Her idea was to bring the students together. In 1998 her colleague, Dr. Susan Inouye Banner, and Fujikawa created the Cafe to help local and international students learn about other cultures and languages. What started with a membership of ten has grown to over 150 students. The Cafe has become a safe haven for students to make new friends and help each other, to understand different cultures and traditions while giving back to their local, national and international community.

Fujikawa and her students have volunteered for the Honolulu Festival as long as I can remember. Her group has volunteered with the Joseph Heco Society, educating the young students who are invited to the Honolulu Festival Educational Tours each year. Her students even created "kamishibai" about Joseph Heco (a form of Japanese storytelling using drawings on boards). Her students will also be partnering with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii for Honolulu Festival's Ennichi Corner this year.

Fujikawa and her students in Japanese 290 (Japanese Language and Culture, Learning in Application) and members of the International Cafe, International Service Learning Program will also be conducting a 30 minute presentation during the Honolulu Festival explaining the meaning and history of "Ennichi". Honolulu Festival's Ennichi Corner is a replica of a typical Japanese Saint's Day festival with traditional Japanese fun and games for the children to play. Doing this presentation at the Honolulu Festival will not only enable the students of Japanese 290 to fulfill some of their course requirements, it will enable Honolulu Festival to receive funding from the Center for Global Partnership-Japan Foundation, an organization based in New York funded by the Japanese government to introduce the Japanese culture to a broad base.

Thank you, Professor Fujikawa, for consistently helping the Honolulu Festival. And thank you for enriching the lives of our college students and the people of our community.
