Honolulu Festival Foundation announces sub theme of
16th Annual Honolulu Festival "Discovery through Traditions"

August 18, 2009

The 16th Annual Honolulu Festival will be held March 12-14, 2010. The Festival's theme, "Pacific Harmony," reflects the Foundation's vision to share the many cultures of the Pacific region with the people of Hawaii and those visiting from all over the world. The Honolulu Festival Foundation is very excited to announce its sub theme for the 16th Annual Honolulu Festival, "Discovery through Traditions."

The Honolulu Festival has gone through a gradual process of development in recent years. What was once an event featuring Japan and Hawaii's culture has expanded to include representatives from Australia, Tahiti, Philippines, Republic of China (Taiwan), China, Korea and the U.S. Mainland. Alaska Native performers joined in the 15th Honolulu Festival. Participation by a variety of local ethnic groups has also increased each year.

The Honolulu Festival held in March of this year commemorated the 15-year milestone with the vision to pass on the valuable cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim to our future generations. It is with this thought in mind that we will continue in 2010, by fusing the old and the new, extending beyond the past and the present, and encouraging "Discovery through Traditions."

The 16th Annual Honolulu Festival is a three-day celebration, highlighting the people and diversity of the Pacific and Asia through an impressive showcase of the arts and culture. More than 5,000 participants and visitors from Japan and other Pacific Rim countries will come to Honolulu specifically to take part in the Festival, giving a boost to Hawaii's tourism economy.

The Festival will be open to the public on March 13 and 14 at various locations including the Hawaii Convention Center, Ala Moana Center and Waikiki Beach Walk. It will conclude with a spectacular Grand Parade through Waikiki along Kalakaua Avenue on Sunday, March 14.

The Honolulu Festival was initiated in 1995 to help promote cultural understanding and harmony between the people of Hawaii and Asia-Pacific. The Honolulu Festival is supported by the Honolulu Festival Foundation, a non-profit organization formed in 2000 to administer Festival activities and perpetuate the cultures, customs and traditions of Asians and Pacific Islanders through community outreach and charitable efforts.
