Honolulu Festival & KCC Livesteaming Project

A new project was created for the 16th Annual Honolulu Festival focusing on volunteerism and community outreach.
The Honolulu Festival Foundation partnered with the students of Kapi'olani Community College for two Livestreaming Projects. These Livestreaming Projects began on Saturday morning at the Hawaii Convention Center and ended on Sunday evening at the Grand Parade in Waikiki.
The Honolulu Festival was transmitted to the world by 36 students from KCC Japanese classes.

Project 1: Share Your Voice with the Next Generation

The project was called "Share Your Voice with the Next Generation." A booth was set up at the Hawaii Convention Center on March 13, Saturday, and March 14, Sunday.
The KCC students were assigned to the various positions needed to broadcast the project live including the positions of the directors, assistant directors, MCs, interviewers, camera operators, mixers and switchers.

They were given a crash course from 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning and were ready for the first interview by 11:00 a.m. They were all quick learners. The students invited attendees, vendors, performers and anyone they felt would make a good interview to the booth.

Most of the students enjoyed the project so much that they came back on Sunday and worked from morning to night. Their promptness, reliability, skills and ability to work as a team were wonderful traits to see.

So what exactly was this project about? The sub theme for the 16th Annual Honolulu Festival was “Discovery through Traditions.” This project was a documentation of people's thoughts on family traditions and culture. Those that were interviewed were asked to talk about culture and traditions that they passed down in their families to future generations, and about its importance.

The students of KCC Japanese class perfectly represent the core essence of the Honolulu Festival’s mission. They are mainly students from Japan who have come to Hawaii to study English and American culture. Many of them speak only a little bit of English. They are learning about Hawaii, its people and culture. They are eager to share their Japanese culture with the people of Hawaii.
This was a great opportunity for them to meet those in the local community and promote cultural exchange.

Project 2: livestreaming the Grand Parade

Project 2 was livestreaming the Grand Parade. A booth was set up the equipment in front of the Westin Moana Surfrider and livestreamed the parade. They also interviewed dignitaries that were invited to watch the parade from the VIP stand.  They interviewed Mike McCartney of HTA, Donald Yannell of First Hawaiian Bank, Kirk Caldwell of the City and County of Honolulu and Paul Cortez of the Philippine Consulate in Honolulu.  They interviewed spectators and performers as well.

It is the desire of the Honolulu Festival to continue with such programs to outreach to the local community in order to get the younger generations involved.
