Shawnee Mission East High School OrchestraMusic Performance
The Shawnee Mission East High School Orchestra is comprised of students in grades 9 through 12, under the direction of Conductor Adam Keda. The group hails from Prairie Village, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. This is the orchestra’s first time in Honolulu; and the students, their director, and chaperones are proud to be representing the State of Kansas at the Honolulu Festival.
China feat. Mika OtsukaMusic Performance
China Voinovich, an exceptionally talented young local musician, will perform a song with Mika Otsuka, a young Japanese singer. The song “Ainouta – A Song of Love,” which describes a story of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii, has been released nationwide in Japan. Together they sing in hope to be a bridge between Hawaii and Japan for generations to come.
Lucie LynchMusic Performance
Local musicians got together to produce a compilation CD for a Japan release, called ALOHA & MAHALO. It is a unique Japanese cover song album sung in English & Hawaiian. Sound healer and folk/rock singer, LUCIE LYNCH will sing. “Tegami”, an Agela Aki cover… and more!! ALOHA & MAHALO was released 11/21/2018, and debuted ranking #1 in World Music with Amazon Japan.
Kamuela KahoanoMusic Performance
Local musicians got together to produce a compilation CD for a Japan release, called ALOHA & MAHALO. It is a unique Japanese cover song album sung in English & Hawaiian. Hoku Award winning, multi-genre artist KAMUELA KAHOANO will sing “Seishun No Kage”, a Tulip cover & “Shounen Jidai”, Inoue Yosui cover. ALOHA & MAHALO was released 11/21/2018, and debuted ranking #1 in World Music with Amazon Japan.
Mark Takeshi McGregorMusic Performance
Described as a “mind-blowing” musician of “huge physical energy” (Victoria Times Colonist), flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor is one of Canada’s leading interpreters of contemporary, avantgarde, and experimental music. As a soloist, chamber musician, improvisor, interdisciplinary artist, and as flutist of the internationally lauded Aventa Ensemble, McGregor has performed extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, Israel, and Australasia.
Kaviyangan Ballad Troupe / Hawaii Taiwanese CenterMusic Performance
Kaviyangan Ballad Troupe devotes itself to Heritage of Paiwai songs and culture. Members are students in Wutang elementary school, located in southern Taiwan. They learn songs in their own tribe, and make efforts to pass on the beauty of tribe culture.
Hokkaido Taisho-koto Hukyukai KotobikaiMusic Performance
We are a group of a traditional Japanese instrument, Taisho Koto performer from Hokkaido. We play at local events and the National Cultural Festival. This is our first time performing abroad. We will showcase the beautiful sound of Taisho Koto and enjoyment of playing Taisho Koto.
Gifu Souden Japanese Drums TeamMusic Performance
Gifu Souden Taiko group was founded in June 1989 and this year marks our 30 Year Anniversary. Our group consists of a wide range of age groups from kindergarten children to adults. This is our 4th participation to the Honolulu Festival for the first time in 15 years as our 30 year celebration.
Hawaii Taiwanese Center/Hung Tsun HuMusic Performance
Winner of 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano awards, Ehru soloist Tsun-Hui Hung (洪充惠) studied the Chinese fiddle from the age of six, winning major performance awards, including the Outstanding Artist Award at the 2004 Taiwan National Erhu Competition. Her musical artistry led to invitations to perform at prestigious music venues and collaborate with composers and musicians from diverse musical backgrounds, including Western-classical, Chinese, and world music. She holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Ohio State University. A resident of Hawaii since 2016, she has also developed an interest in interpreting Hawaiian music on the erhu together with musicians on Oahu. In addition, she is proud of being the 2004 champion of the National Taiwan Taichi Competition.
Waseda University Tsugaru Shamisen Club MitsudomoeMusic Performance
We’re a Tsugaru shamisen club from Waseda University. Tsugaru shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument. We will perform from folk songs to modern music including Japanese pop songs just with Tsugaru Shamisens.
