Students of the Nagaoka Institute of Design learn about various aspects of design. At our booth, we will help you enjoy painting an uchiwa, a round paper fan, with a stencil method, known as “kappazuri.” You can create your own Japanese-style uchiwa by choosing your favorite pattern, placing it on your uchiwa, and applying colorful ink around it.
The visitors can enjoy a hands-on activity of arts and crafts. One of the projects is transcribing kanji (Chinese characters) on a Japanese-style tenugui towel designed with specific patterns. Another project is called Glasritzen (glass engraving) in which you use a rotary grinder to engrave your name or other letters on a glass cup with a sandblasted design.
The Nagaoka Institute of Design and the University of Hawaii School of Architecture entered into an academic affiliation in August 2015. They will start mutual exchange programs for students and faculty members. At the Nagaoka booth, NID will offer craft classes to make chopstick rests by hammering metal pieces and goldfish bowls for children. Everyone is welcome to enjoy trying traditional Japanese craftwork and its artistic taste.
The Nagaoka Institute of Design is preparing for exchange programs with the University of Hawaii. The Creative Craft Workshop will be held at our booth where visitors can enjoy applying traditional Japanese gold leaf on postcards and painting wind chimes.
