Satsuma Biwa Gogen Suimei Fujino

Satsuma Biwa is an instrument played to lift the morale of warriors during the Sengoku Period, and it doubled as a weapon. Songs for the instrument are centered on The Genpei war and the wars during the Sengoku Period. Please enjoy the Satsuma Biwa performance that has won awards at numerous contests, including the Biwa Contest by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Kinshukai is a music educational organization that promotes the taishogoto (Japanese stringed musical instrument). Our members are participating from Ishikawa Prefecture and Kagawa Prefecture for this year’s Honolulu Festival. Please enjoy the sound of taishogoto which was invented in Japan.

Takasaki University of Health and Welfare Wadaiko Mai

Music Performance

The Wadaiko (Japanese drum) Group “MAI” is organized by the students of Takasaki University of Health and Welfare. We visit local events as well as daycare centers and nursing homes, where people across generations enjoy our wadaiko performance. We have also performed in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and interacted with people there.

Hawaii Miyazaki Kenjinkai (Chair Hirotoku Yamamono) is proud to bring over the singer, JILLE to perform her songs at the Honoluu Festival. She has been appointed as the local Miyagi prefecture’s Saitoshi’s ambassador.

Members of Yasuko Shimizu and Her Fellow Singers perform at various concerts and dinner theaters. We have also hosted over 50 productions of “The Fountain of Angels,” a charity concert promoting the campaign against pediatric cancer for 22 years. We believe that we can reach everyone’s heart through music, and we continue to take part in promoting US-Japan friendship and cultural exchange.

The Hawai‘i Gagaku Society was founded in 1968 by Reverend Masatoshi Shamoto and his first generation of students in Hawai‘i. It is a community-based group, with University of Hawai’i ties, that meets weekly to study and practice this ancient music. The group has performed on numerous occasions in Hawai‘i including ceremonies at shrines and temples, ceremonies at the Japanese consulate, the annual Tōrō Nagashi festival at the Ala Wai canal, as well as moonviewing concerts about once a year at the University of Hawai‘i.

Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii

Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko originated in Okinawa in 1982, combining traditional Eisa and Karate forms with contemporary influences and music to create a new and unique taiko style. RMD remains headquartered in Okinawa, however, the club has grown tremendously and now includes chapters all around the world. Our own Hawaii chapter was founded by Akemi Martin-sensei and includes branches on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island.

4U Ukulele Quartet

4U Ukulele Quartet is group of four teenage boys who are all ukulele champions from various contests in Honolulu. They performed for the live recording of From the Top at the Blaisdell concert hall last December.Their name is Taiga Benito, Ryan Nakagawa, Given and Chane Yagi.

Dance Junction Hawaii was established in 2005 and has dancers ages 5-18 who perform various styles of dance such as jazz, lyrical, contemporary, pom and funk. Dance Junction Hawaii has travelled to California, Washington, Texas and Japan for competition and has been awarded several national and internationl titles.

Karlie at the age of 15 has won numerous ukulele/vocal competitions such as the prestigious Ukulele International Contest, Duke’s Ukes, and the 2015 Brown Bags to Stardom. Karlie is also recognized as a songwriter winning the Hawaii Book & Music Festival’s Songwriting Competition and a semifinalist for the 2017 International Songwriting Competition. Karlie performs a wide range of genres such as traditional/contemporary Hawaiian, Pop, R&B, and Japanese. Karlie’s unique soulful voice surprises many the first time they hear her.
