The Moanalua High School NanTa team its part of Ms. Soon Young Kim’s Korean Language program since November of 2016. Students get together and practice drum about 2 – 6 hours a wewk after school and learn drum rhythms from traditional Korean percussion music.

Ukulele A.C.T. is comprised of the dynamic young trio AJ, Cameron and Taiga. Together they placed 2nd in the International ukulele competition in 2017 and are looking forward to sharing their music around the world.

Harada Naoatsusa Kai

Harada Naoatsusa (Mrs. Nonaka) has been teaching minyo singing, shamisen, taiko and narimono since 1990. Her teacher is Japan National Treasure Harada Naoyuki. Since 1990, she has held recitals every five years, benefiting local non-profit organizations such as UH Music Dept., Maui Japanese Teachers Association, Hilo Japanese Center, Kuakini Medical Center, and the Tohoku Triple Disaster. She is happy to participate in this special 150th anniversary of the arrival of Gannenmono immigrants.

We are a duo of middle-aged men from Yamagata. We cover songs from various genres with our signature “JUNKS” style with an acoustic guitar and a cajón.

Satsuma Biwa Gogen Suimei Fujino

Music Performance

Satsuma Biwa is an instrument played to lift the morale of warriors during the Sengoku Period, and it doubled as a weapon. Songs for the instrument are centered on The Genpei war and the wars during the Sengoku Period. Please enjoy the Satsuma Biwa performance that has won awards at numerous contests, including the Biwa Contest by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Takasaki University of Health and Welfare Wadaiko Mai

The Wadaiko (Japanese drum) Group “MAI” is organized by the students of Takasaki University of Health and Welfare. We visit local events as well as daycare centers and nursing homes, where people across generations enjoy our wadaiko performance. We have also performed in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and interacted with people there.

Hawaii Miyazaki Kenjinkai (Chair Hirotoku Yamamono) is proud to bring over the singer, JILLE to perform her songs at the Honoluu Festival. She has been appointed as the local Miyagi prefecture’s Saitoshi’s ambassador.

Yasuko Shimizu and Her Fellow Singers

Members of Yasuko Shimizu and Her Fellow Singers perform at various concerts and dinner theaters. We have also hosted over 50 productions of “The Fountain of Angels,” a charity concert promoting the campaign against pediatric cancer for 22 years. We believe that we can reach everyone’s heart through music, and we continue to take part in promoting US-Japan friendship and cultural exchange.

Hawaii Gagaku Society

The Hawai‘i Gagaku Society was founded in 1968 by Reverend Masatoshi Shamoto and his first generation of students in Hawai‘i. It is a community-based group, with University of Hawai’i ties, that meets weekly to study and practice this ancient music. The group has performed on numerous occasions in Hawai‘i including ceremonies at shrines and temples, ceremonies at the Japanese consulate, the annual Tōrō Nagashi festival at the Ala Wai canal, as well as moonviewing concerts about once a year at the University of Hawai‘i.
