Honolulu Art Market 2026

Japanese Tuna Cutting Demonstration

At the Hawaii Convention Center, the main venue of the Honolulu Festival, special anniversary programs will be held, including a 30th Anniversary Kagami-wari (sake barrel opening ceremony) and a traditional tuna cutting show.

Festival visitors will be offered samples of Japanese sake and freshly prepared tuna on while supplies last.

The Takatsu River (邦題)高津川
Manabu Saito runs a ranch in a mountain village where Kagura, said to be the origin of kabuki, is a source of local pride. Worried that his son Tatsuya skips practice, Manabu fears he will leave like many young people. When Manabu’s former elementary school closes due to depopulation, the crisis becomes undeniable, threatening Kagura and other traditions.
As a final athletic meet and reunion are planned, Manabu urges Makoto, a Tokyo lawyer, to return home. Debating development on the Takatsu River, Manabu takes Makoto to the riverbank, where he learns secret.

Mentai-piriri (邦題)映画 めんたいぴりり
Toshiyuki and Chiyoko run a small grocery store, “Lucky Grocers,” in Hakata. Toshiyuki devotes himself to recreating mentaiko, the spicy cod roe he loved while growing up in Busan. One day, he catches a poorly dressed girl shoplifting from the store and
discovers she is his son’s classmate, orphaned by the war and unable to afford basic necessities for a school trip. Moved by her situation, Toshiyuki decides to help. Based on a true story, the film portrays people struggling to survive and find hope amid Japan’s postwar economic transition and growth.

Maui Mikoshi Unveiling Ceremony

The Maui mikoshi contest was developed exclusively for high school students in Maui. Each year there is a competition among high schools to design a mikoshi for the Honolulu Festival. The winning Maui mikoshi is unveiled and displayed at the Hawaii Convention Center over the Festival weekend. Students selected as the overall winner visit Honolulu during the weekend of the festival and march in the Grand Parade showcasing their award winning mikoshi.

BENTO HARASSMENT (邦題)今日も嫌がらせ弁当
Hachijojima, a small island of blue seas and green mountains, is home to a single mother and her rebellious high school daughter. Once affectionate, the girl now ignores her mother completely.
Frustrated, the mother fights back with “Iyagarase Bento” (Revenge Lunches), sending cute characters and sugary messages to embarrass her daughter daily. For three years, she never misses making a bento, even after long nights. Kyoichi Morii is a cranky retired headmaster living alone after the death of his beloved wife. Gruff and aloof, he has pushed away most of the townspeople.
