Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhist Church of Hawaii members use the teachings of Ekayana Buddhism and the wisdom found in the Three-fold Lotus Sutra to guide their daily lives. We were founded to combine traditional teaching with everyday application to help a modern world find peace and harmony. Our members are playing the flute, bell and drum to create a rhythmic chant that the members raise and twirl the matoi around with. Twirling the matoi atop a roof of a burning building was used in Edo period Japan to spur on the Japanese firefighters into working their hardest to put out the many fires that plagued the cities.
